Insect bite or EM rash? Recognising the symptoms of Lyme disease
13 Oct 2024
Public Health & Wellbeing Forum
Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick. Symptoms of early Lyme disease may include an erythema migrans rash (sometimes, but not always, with a classic ‘bull’s eye' appearance) and non specific flu-like symptoms.
Early diagnosis and treatment provides the best chance of recovery, but symptoms can be non-specific and easily missed at all stages, with potential long term debilitating consequences.
This session will explore the key role that pharmacists and their staff can play in raising awareness of the importance of tick bite prevention and advising on the management of tick bites. It will also discuss how to recognise the symptoms of Lyme disease and how to differentiate between reactions to insect bites ( which can be treated under Pharmacy First) and tick bites where an EM rash and/or other symptoms of Lyme disease need immediate referral for appropriate antibiotic treatment.
At the end of this session attendees will be able to :
-Recognise the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease
-More confidently advise on tick bite prevention & use of tick removers.
-Discuss how to differentiate EM rashes from other insect bites/ rashes
-Refer to the NICE guideline and CKS guideline on Lyme disease
-Recognise if a Rx for Lyme disease treatment does not meet the correct dosage - as per NICE
-Access further information from charities like Lyme Resource Centre (LRC) and LDUK.
