Promoting the safe and effective supply and use of medicines by older people with visual or hearing impairment
Older age is associated with increased prevalence of sensory (visual and/or hearing) impairment and the use of medicines. There has been limited exploration of the medicine-related needs of older people with sensory impairment. The SIPA1 and 2 studies used mixed and multiple methods and the concept of the medicine journey (consultation, order, obtain, store, administer, dispose) to develop a greater understanding of medicine-related needs as well as potential solutions. This presentation will summarise the challenges and describe potential solutions including those that have been developed and informed by this research programme.
Learning outcomes:
Increased awareness of the:
- medicine-related needs of older people with sensory impairment.
- potential solutions and strategies
- free training resources available to support community pharmacy personnel provide support for older people with sensory impairment
