Community pharmacy's role in mental health
Community pharmacies are accessible, have long opening hours and often located in socially deprived areas where people are twice as likely to experience mental ill health. UK-based research has identified willingness amongst community pharmacy personnel to support people with mental ill health.
Depression is the most common mental ill health condition with global estimates suggesting that over 300 million people affected.
This study used a range of research methods to identify evidence of the contribution that community pharmacy could make to the management of depression, and to adopt a consensus approach to define what elements could be included in a service to support people with depression.
Learning outcomes:
Increased awareness of:
- the prevalence of mental ill health in the UK population, especially depression.
- existing evidence of the contribution that community pharmacy could make to supporting people with depression.
- a systematic evidence-based approach use to develop a service to support people with depression.
