New NPA Chair and Chief Executive talk about their priorities
The NPA believes it has a duty to help pharmacies wrestle the challenges and seize the opportunities.
NPA Chair, Nitin Sodha, says: “The NPA is an organisation that is central to the history, and the future, of independent community pharmacy. I believe the NPA’s mission is to support our members at all times and for all time; in other words to equip the sector for the future, as well as the here-and-now. I am conscious that long term trends in society and health, as well as developments in digital technology cannot be overlooked. One of the NPA’s Core Beliefs is that pharmacies must be progressive and modern, while at the same time being true to the historic values of pharmacy as a personal, caring profession.
Our sector is full of compassionate and driven individuals, who do amazing work. The slogan for my own group of pharmacies is ‘Community Driven’ – and I believe that this is a reflection not only of my own values but also a characteristic of independent pharmacies across the land. Community pharmacy has unique strengths and delivers immensely valuable benefits to patients, communities and the NHS. The network of local pharmacies is, and must remain, the beating heart of pharmaceutical care in the community. So our job is to help independents to prosper, professionally and commercially, for the ultimate benefit of the patients and communities they serve.
The NPA’s chief executive, Mark Lyonette, continues: “Despite being new in the role of NPA chief executive, I can already see a number of exciting opportunities in play. We will be looking to work constructively with government and other stakeholders to help secure a vibrant future for community pharmacy. Most importantly, we must remember that our sole purpose is to serve members – to help support them professionally and to add value to their bottom line. This in turn permits further investment in patient care, leading to greater professional satisfaction and creating loyalty.”
At the Pharmacy Show, the NPA will be showcasing the many products and
services it provides to members – as well as listening out for concerns and bright
ideas. Nitin says, I look forward to meeting many NPA members – and potential new members - at the Pharmacy Show. It’s part of being accountable for what I do as Chair, as well as keeping in touch with everyone’s needs”.
