Specialist Pharmacy Service launches new Pharmacy First podcast series
Pharmacy First launched in England on 31 January 2024, allowing patients access to assessment and treatment for seven common clinical conditions from their community pharmacy, without the need for a GP appointment, as part of a major transformation in the way the NHS delivers care. As the service approaches almost a year since it was launched, the sector is still adapting to the unique challenges of the new responsibility.
In October the Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) launched a brand-new podcast series discussing issues surrounding the new service in community pharmacy. In the series, pharmacy colleagues and expert clinical speakers share challenges and try to debunk some of the myths.
The podcast is hosted by Kieran Reynolds, a Specialist Pharmacist working in the Medicines Use and Safety team in SPS. Kieran champions the role of specialist pharmacists in providing specialist care and using their skills and knowledge to promote safe access to medicines and improve patient experience.
Each episode focuses on one of the clinical conditions, with an additional episode dedicated to paediatrics. The first five episodes have already been published, with the remaining three following later this year. The episodes currently published focus around sinusitis, sore throat, urinary tract infections, otitis media, and clinical issues when providing the service to children.
